Seattle (AP) — Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll announced Tuesday that his team has begun construction on a new home in the heart of downtown Seattle, a move that could have ramifications for a team that has won just one playoff game in the past 15 seasons.
The team has been a perennial contender in the NFL for years, but a stadium project to be named CenturyLink Field has been an ongoing goal for years.
A public hearing for the plan was held earlier this month and was held in partnership with the city.
The project has been expected for some time, but was delayed after a local contractor and a Seattle police officer were injured during construction.
Carroll said Tuesday that the stadium project will be completed by late summer or early fall, after which the team will return to Seattle for its next home, the CenturyLink stadium, that has been the home of the NFL’s Seahawks since 1999.
Carroll and Seahawks president Joe Banner have said the team wants to have a new venue in time for the 2020 season.
The Seahawks play in the city for the first time since 2012 and are hoping to be back in Seattle next season.
Barkley, who is in his sixth season with the team, said the project will not affect the team’s schedule, but will affect scheduling.
He said the Seahawks are working with a local architect to get the stadium completed in time to be ready for the 2021 season.
Banner said the stadium will be a $1.9 billion project.
The cost has not been finalized and a decision will be made at a later date, he said.
The stadium project is being financed through a franchise tax that has generated more than $200 million for the city and has been approved by the city council.
Banner added that the city will also contribute to the project through an infrastructure bond that will be approved by voters in 2021.
Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said the Browns will not move to Seattle.
He did not say how the team plans to spend its remaining money on the stadium, but said he would work with the Seahawks to develop the project.
Seahawks head coach Carroll says he wants the team to return to the city, but not in 2021 when the team would need to make some major changes.
He also said he wanted the team in Seattle because the stadium is located in the downtown core.
Carroll has said that the team is committed to a new location in 2021 and that the next home for the Seahawks is likely in the former CenturyLink site.
Seattle will be home to the first NFL franchise to be located in its city since it was founded in 1890, in the form of the Seattle Supersonics.
