Newsweek More than half of all households in the United States have a TV set, with about three-quarters of households reporting at least one of the devices, according to a new survey from consumer research firm RBC Research.
The study found that almost four-in-ten American households have a Samsung TV and about one-third of homes have a Sony Smart TV.
The survey of 2,200 households in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., found that one-in.
of Americans now own at least two or more televisions.
But only 3% of Americans have two or three televisions, and more than half (53%) of households in rural areas have only one television.
“As of the end of June, the majority of households have one or two TVs,” said RBC research analyst Jennifer Hochberg.
“As a result, people are more likely to have multiple TVs in their homes and spend less time in their living rooms.”
The survey also found that about three quarters of households owned a TV that was connected to a home broadband connection and only 16% of households own a TV connected to the Internet.
The majority of homes (69%) also own multiple TVs that can stream content from a central online streaming service like Netflix.
And just under half (47%) of homes own multiple televisions that can play multiple video games.
The vast majority of Americans (84%) have at least a Roku streaming box, a device that connects to the internet and streams content to a TV.
However, only 10% of American households own two or fewer streaming devices, and less than half have a third TV.
In contrast, only 15% of homes with a Samsung or Sony TV have a Roku, and almost one-quarter (23%) have only a Samsung.
“There is a great divide between how many devices people own and how many TVs they own,” said Hochber.
“We believe that consumers need to understand the differences between the three major players and how they are used.
For example, a Sony or Samsung TV may be used for a lot of entertainment, but the Roku may be an important part of the home entertainment setup.”
The Samsung and Roku streaming boxes are more affordable, but they don’t have the connectivity and the TV is a little more powerful,” Hochbeng said.”
The survey found that people who own a smart TV also own about three times more video games consoles and two-thirds of them own multiple consoles.”
There are also a lot better TVs that come with a smart box than there are smart TV sets with a streaming box.”
The survey found that people who own a smart TV also own about three times more video games consoles and two-thirds of them own multiple consoles.
Hochberg said that smart TVs are a good fit for many people.
“For people who have more than one TV, a smart device like a Roku or a Chromecast may be more of a necessity,” Hichberg said, “and a smart streaming device like the Amazon Fire TV Stick or Roku Streaming Stick is a good option for people who just want to stream content to multiple devices.”
Hochburg said that a smart television is often the first thing people buy.
“Smart TVs are more of an appliance than a home entertainment system,” she said.
Hohberg says the next generation of smart devices will be better-connected and will enable more intelligent content, including streaming services and games.
“One of the things that we’ve found is that smart devices are a very good way to bring more intelligent entertainment to people,” Hothberg said.
“For example, if you have a smart tablet, you can stream games to your TV or your smart phone and have them automatically connect to your smart TV to stream your TV,” Hock said.
